Color can affect how we feel and influence what we think. In general, bright bold colors tend to stir us up, while the softer pastel colors calm and relax us. Responses to colors can vary by age, gender and cultural background.

Colors will affect how a potential buyer reacts to your web site. Carefully select your color scheme for your web site, web header, and ebook cover. Here are some guidelines to help you make good color choices. Bear in mind that these are guidelines, and that there are no hard and fast rules. Just use common sense.

* Consider your audience. For example, if your web site primarily targets men, then you will want to use strong, bold colors. If your target audience is women, then choose soft, pastel colors. If your focus is on children, choose bright, vibrant colors.

* Choose colors that are appropriate for your web site’s topic. For example, green may work well for web sites about starting a home business, making money, and reducing debt.

* Keep the number of colors down to two or three, and no more. This does not include photographs which can have a whole range of colors.

* Make sure that all of the colors you use work well together and do not clash.

* Communicate your message with easy-to-read text. Use colors for your text that contrast with the background color so your text is readable. For example, a dark font on a light background is easy to read.

* Consider the mood you want to create. Remember that emotions trigger sales. People buy what they want – not what they need. The list below will show you how colors can affect us in different ways.

Red – Action, energy, strength, passion, fire, heat, power, attention-getting. Can also mean love and romance. A strong masculine color. Red is a good color for a call-to-action. Red is cheerfulness, excitement, and warmth. Pink is a soft version of red. It is most associated with romance, calming affect; a feminine color.

Blue – Confidence, travel, freedom, truth, professionalism, wealth and power. Also tranquility, dependable, acceptance, patience, understanding, cooperation, comfort, loyalty and security. It is one of the most calming colors and is associated with the sky and the sea, intelligence, reassurance, and trust. Blue has also been known to be an appetite suppressant, so it would not be good for cookbooks or recipes but you can consider it for diet books.

Green – Money, wealth, prosperity, calm, health, food, nature, hope, growth, freshness, soothing, sharing, and responsiveness. Green symbolizes spring, renewal, and fertility.

Orange – Health and vitality, autumn, youthfulness, fire, steadfastness, courage, confidence, friendliness, cheerfulness, warmth, excitement and energy. Has been known to stimulate the appetite. Vibrant and warm, orange is associated with autumn and the earth.

Yellow – Light, purity, understanding, caution, brightness, intelligence, joy, organization, Spring. Yellow often represents sunshine, warmth, light, energy and happiness.

Purple – Dignity, sophistication, creativity, spirituality and mystery. Deep purple is associated with royalty and richness, while lavender is associated with romance and nostalgia.

Brown – Credibility, stability, the hearth, home, the earth, wood, comfort and strength. Brown can be used as a neutral or a warm color.

Black – Space, night, authority, dramatic, classy, committed, serious, power, elegance, and sophistication.

White – Purity, peace, perfection, fresh, easy, cleanliness, goodness, and spirituality. Worth noting here, white represents life and marriage in Western cultures, but it represents death and sorrow in Eastern cultures.

Grey – A conservative color, symbolizing security, maturity and reliability.

Take advantage of the impact color can have on your online sales and choose colors that will create positive responses.

At present, a vast majority of webmasters are designing for IE (Internet Explorer) 6, which is not as W3C standards compliant as is FireFox, Netscape, Safari and Opera.

Author: Rishabh Bathla
Article Tools:

In my article – “The importance of sound website design & search spiders to Internet Marketers,” I mentioned the importance of a designer being cognizant of the fact that web browser standards are not yet fully harmonized – a web page that looks great in Internet Explorer (6) might look hideous in a Mozilla based browser like FireFox or Netscape.

I also noted that with the explosion of devices with which to serve Internet applications, compliance with W3C standards has become critical.

When the final release for IE 7 for Windows XP, Server 2003 & Vista is launched, hopefully before the end of 2006, the tables will be turned, so to speak.

Internet Explorer 7 will be more standards compliant and your HTML code will be subject to much more rigorous interpretation than is the case with IE 6, consequently some web pages that look fine in IE 6 might not look the same IE 7.

In IE 7 Microsoft has made a solemn effort to fix the browsers acquiescence to W3C standards and CSS(Cascading Style Sheets) compatibility. CSS interpretation as recommended by W3C has been improved tremendously giving designers and developers more leverage in functionality for cross-browser design.

Microsoft asserts that they are taking W3C compatibility issues seriously.

Concisely what this means is that IE 7 will tend to interpret your web page code more scrupulously than before.

Therefore, if you have been designing your pages and have not bothered to check how they render in W3C Standards Compliant browsers like FireFox, you may be in for a rude shock when IE 7 finally rolls out.

If you have not been incorporating W3C Web standards in your design strategy you may need to re-design for IE 7.

How should you go about it?

Design for “strict” browsers like FireFox first. Not only is FireFox a more standards-compliant browser but it is also the primary competitor to Internet Explorer. A contender backed by Google’s marketing machine — and therefore, is not likely do “a Netscape” on designers.

Prior and up to IE 4.x, Netscape was the leading browser in the market with almost 80% of the market, but in a bid to force the issue culminating with proprietary goofs by AOL to whom Netscape sold out, they screwed up big time with versions 4 up to 6. A bitter war of attrition with Microsoft in the late nineties did not help either.

Microsoft grabbed the opportunity and gobbled the Browser market overnight.

With version 7+ Netscape has been revived. How well it will compete with IE and FireFox remains to be seen.

I will be the first to admit that most the web pages I have built in the last several years are not always standards compliant…and so are ninety five percent of other web pages — as I stated in my previous article, “if strict W3C standards were to be enforced in browsers, most websites would go out of business.”

To design for FireFox a designer needs to combine Valid CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) for “look and feel” and W3C compliant HTML for web page structure.

The combination of these two design strategies is powerful in that it elicits tremendous flexibility, ease of maintenance and opens up extensive possibilities in website design. The benefits are rewarding, and every webmaster should attempt to utilize this two pronged scheme in their design routine.

Making changes to and/or styling a site designed with CSS is much easier and more elegant than messing around with a traditional table-based design.

CSS may look intimidating to a first-timer but once you familiarize with the basics you can progressively harness the power of CSS to your full benefit. In addition, most web page design tools such as Dreamweaver of FrontPage have built in modules with which you can automatically generate CSS code, which you can then view in a plain text editor for study purposes.

To aid you in your CSS endeavor you need the following developer tools: Web Developer Extension for FireFox and the Internet Explorer Developer Toolbar. Great time-saving tools for creating, understanding, and troubleshooting Web pages.

As a matter of fact, by installing some of the 1,500+ available FireFox extensions you can eliminate the need for quite a chunk of standalone desktop applications.

After designing your Web page remember to us a MarkUp Validation Service to check whether your Web page conforms to W3C Recommendations. If there are errors, the validator will notify you of them and suggest corrections.

Also, remember that when designing using W3C standards guidelines a lot of code(tags) that were very valid in the “Pre-Standards” era have completely depreciated and will be ignored completely by browsers. If you ignore these errors during validation, your web pages might not render correctly.

In many instances, you may never be able to achieve 100% HTML or XHTML validation. In such cases you may want put the following DOCTYPE declaration in your document — at the top of your web page before the tag:

< !DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN” >

Note: remove space after “”

A “Document Type Definition” or DTD supplies Web browsers with information about which (X)HTML specification your web page is built upon, which instructs the Browser how to render the page for viewing.

In the example captioned above a standards compliant browsers will interpret your web page as an HTML 4.01 document, and because it is marked as “Transitional,” it will display it in “quirks mode,” meaning that the browser will forgo the strict standards mode, and display your page like it would be displayed in older “non-strict” browsers, while still supporting any tags developed after IE 4, Netscape 4 and others.

On the contrary, the following DOCTYPE declaration tells the standards compliant browsers that your web page should be displayed in strict compliance with the DOCTYPE declaration.

< !DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC “-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN” >

A complete list of recommended DTDs can be found at the W3C Website.

If you leave the DOCTYPE out, the browsers automatically switch to “quirks mode,” therefore, it is important to include the DOCTYPE declaration on every web page that you build in order for it to be rendered correctly.

If your Web pages render well in FireFox at present you probably will not encounter any major problems in IE 7 other than minor adjustments here and there. However, I think a realistic designer should at least make a meaningful attempt to follow W3C guidelines for it is the correct way forward.

Do it now so that you will ready for the future…re-designs and total overhauls are a time consuming and painful process. A process, which becomes much easier if your initial design incorporated structurally clean and modular (X)HTML with CSS compliance.

We all know the importance of promotion a website in order to bring it in the knowledge of the search engine as well as the users. For this purpose banner advertising can be used as one of the most cost effective form of online advertising. This form of online marketing is used by many affiliate marketers, internet companies and website owners for building net traffic, lead generation and product selling. You can expect higher return of profits from banner ads.

In simpler words banner advertisements are graphic images that are displayed at the top most part of a web page. Here advertisers buy the web space from websites that have same content, similar target customers, based on it the rates for displaying the ads is determined. The exact cost of banner advertising varies according to the popularity level of the website. Therefore sites that have higher visitors’ traffic charge more for the advertising space on their web page.

However its costs is also dependent on if advertiser is paying for per click or the impression. In case its pay-per-click ad, you get the pay from the advertiser when the visitor clicks on the ad. In pay per impression ads payments are made on flat rate basis for the ad that is being displayed.

You can achieve many multiple goals by banner advertising like creating brand awareness, promotion of special offers, products/services and targeting the traffic.

It has advantages also for the websites that put up these ads. There are many websites whose major portion of earning comes from revenue generated from selling of the advertising space on the web page. In certain instances site pay for displaying their banner advertisements on other websites by selling web space on their website.

It does generate income for the website irrespective of the sales made by the advertiser. Here whether or not users click on them or not, websites get the payment for banner ads. However a company wont pay for advertising space that yields no returns, but in case of banner advertising revenue generation is not dependent on the visitors’ actions.

When the popularity of your website increases, so does the profit earned through banner advertising. So you would get more number of advertisers to display their ad on your website, as it gets higher visitor base. Thus such sites can charge more for the advertising space.

The average domestic swimming pool holds somewhere between 22,000-60,000 liters of water.

This amount is usually a once-only fill quantity and from then on the pool needs only to be topped up from time to time. Savings can be made both in costs and water usage by limiting the frequency and water quantity used in topping up.

Keeping the pool properly filtered and chemically balanced are just two of the ways of ensuring against unnecessary emptying of the pool and frequent back washing. This will help save water.

Looking after the pool is really very simple. It is a combination of adequate filtration time and correct chemical treatment.

Adequate Filtration:

During the summer it is recommended that the filter should run for 8 to 10 hours a day and certainly whenever people are using the pool. While ever the filter is operating, the surface of the water will be skimmed off, removing things like leaves and dust before they sink. To remove the dust and dirt collected by the filter, the filter must be “back washed”. This procedure reverses the water flow through the filter and flushes the dirt down the drain. Only continue back washing until the water in the sight glass provided, or at the drain point is clean and clear. This should take no more than one or two minutes. Excessive back washing can waste up to 2,000 liters of water.

Chemical Balance:

You don’t have to be a scientist to correctly balance your pool. There are three basic rules to follow. Firstly, adjust the Total Alkalinity level. Secondly, adjust the pH and lastly, ensure the required amount of sanitizer is added either by manually dosing or via an automatic chlorination.

By continually maintaining correct water balance the need for emptying your pool and the subsequent topping up can save thousands of liters of water annually.

Correct Water Level:

Making sure the water level is only half way up the skimmer opening ensures the correct skimming action and also saves water. Do not overfill your pool. It reduces the effectiveness of the skimmer and wastes water.

Covering the Pool:

More and more pool owners are discovering the advantages of heating their pools. With water heated to a pleasant 25 o C, the pool can be enjoyed for another three months at least. To reduce evaporation and the subsequent need to top-up, a pool cover is a wise investment. Covers not only save water but help keep the pool clean and reduce the energy costs by reducing heat loss. The availability of rollers for covers makes it a quick and easy way of lowering costs and saving water.

Leaks:

Many pools in the Sydney area are now twenty or thirty years old and may be in need of attention. Make a point of thoroughly checking around the pool for any damp spots. Check the plumbing for leaks and valves or pipe joiners.

One drip per second can waste up to 7,000 liters of water per year. A steady dribble could waste hundreds of thousands of liters per year and add to your water bill.

Safety Saves Lives and Water:

Safety is one of the most important factors of Swimming Pool & Spa ownership, particularly where small children are concerned. Whenever groups of children are in the pool, “bombing” and “horseplay” can get out of hand so it is a good idea to make sure children are well supervised. By restricting this type of behavior you not only avoid accidents but prevent water loss due to excessive splashing.

These are all good, valid reasons for choosing to work from home. Unfortunately, many home business professionals lose sight of the reasons they started working from home in the first place.

Anyone who operates a home business knows that we tend to work twice as many hours as those who work in traditional businesses. Many home business professionals become work-a-holics, spending twelve to twenty hours per day, seven days a week, working. It becomes a habit. This habit can jeopardize your health and your family. It can take away your joy of living. One day, you will wake up and find that you have lost everything that you were working from home to have.

There are ways to avoid developing this habit. If you already have this habit, there are ways to break it. Start by setting regular “office” hours, and regular “work” days. Let your family know what these hours are. When you make your work schedule, make sure that all of your tasks are scheduled during these hours – no exceptions and no excuses. If you are already a work-a-holic, this will be hard to adjust, but you can adjust if you work at it. If you are not yet a work-a-holic, determine work days and hours, make a schedule, and stick to it from the very beginning. Schedule two days off each week. This is your weekend, and should coincide with your family’s weekend. Not checking your email for two solid days will be tough, but you can do it. Turn the computer off, close the door to your office, and go “home” for the weekend. Make plans with your family. Get out of the house. Take your spouse for a walk. Go on a picnic. Go see a movie. It doesn’t matter what you do, as long as it isn’t work, and it includes your family. If there are no family events planned for your weekend, find a hobby. Make sure your hobby doesn’t have anything to do with your work, and try to include your family. The point of working at home was to have more time to spend with these important people.

During your work week, after quitting time, take some time for yourself to recharge your batteries. Try to avoid thinking about work. Eat meals with your family, watch television with them, play a board game or cards. Whatever you do, make sure that your office door remains closed until it is time to work again. It is a good idea to plan at least one week long vacation during the year. Your business will not fail if you take a week off. It may fail if you constantly take a week off, however. The key is to know how much is too much, and how little is not enough. It doesn’t matter what you do, as long as you aren’t working during your “off” time. Taking time off will refresh you. You will be rested and ready to go when it is time to work again. You will find that you enjoy life more. You will enjoy working from home more. Your health may improve if you get more exercise as well. Your family will certainly enjoy having your time and attention.

Your heart, which is the truth of you, is freely standing before the arising of all existence.

The only thing that has hindered your recognition of the simplicity and freedom of your true nature is you believing in and identifying with your chattering mind. For you to consciously live as your heart, you need to begin to see in a new way.

Your heart is already freely standing and wide open for you to consciously be it. The freedom of your heart is already the foundation of life, prior to any movement, in any direction. This is true in every single moment.

The core of you is the aliveness that is constantly flowing through the mind-body package that you identify yourself as being. You can become sensitive to the energetic aliveness as it flows behind and through your eyes right now. This aliveness of your heart is always here, always flowing behind and through your eyes.

Learn to bring your conscious focus of attention back to this place that stands free of everything, and stop right here. You can stop, at any time, in any moment. Simply see this aliveness flowing through your eyes and stop here in this moment. This is what is true of you right now.

In seeing this aliveness, you begin to enter, and become sensitive to, the rich and depthless clarity of your true nature.

Stopping here as your heart will release you into the peace and beauty of your eternal freedom. This requires your willingness to be your heart. Without this willingness you have no option but to be caught in the illusion of living less than the trueness of what already is.

You are more than able to be your true nature but you must be willing to stay here, deeply at rest. Whenever the conscious focus of your attention is absent, all that is left is the unconscious drive of the chattering mind.

You can learn to move in life, without losing touch with the feeling sense of this energetic aliveness that is you. This is a very simple thing.

There will be a new joy in your daily living as you begin to move consciously as your true nature. Your heart will be given the space to spiral out into life via your mind and body.

You will naturally free up from the unconscious mind-directed movement in your life when you learn to choose to see the immediacy of the aliveness always flowing through your eyes right now.

Aligning your attention to this aliveness, resting as this one, and moving into life as your true nature, will awaken you to the richness of your being. As you choose to move as your true nature in life, old tendencies of your mind and body will begin to unravel from their old patterns.

As you begin to perceive and live as the energetic aliveness that is your core essence, you will naturally be happier in your daily living. When you consciously enter into the aliveness of life, at any time, the blessings of its love are immediately felt. Only in focusing your attention on the truth of who you are, gives you a deep sense of contentment.

In being your heart in life you are immediately and always bathed in freedom and joy, although, as they become your normal daily living these feelings become ordinary. This aliveness is what permeates all of life – always and at all times. The more moments that you consciously give to the heart of you, the more you will awaken to what you have always been.

In these moments you will know that you are the oneness of all life, feeling totally loved and loving. In this moment right now and in every moment you are in conscious communion with your heart, and you are already and completely free of everything. However, it is only when you align your conscious attention to your heart that you become this freedom, contentment, love, and beauty.

You lack nothing to awaken to this love. For you to awaken to living the reality of your heart, you are to become conscious of the energetic aliveness that is the core of you, which stands prior to your body and mind.

Energetically realising the heart of you, again and again and moment by moment, whenever you become aware that you have lost sight of the central core of the aliveness of this you, is what will ground you in the heart.

When this level of truth is taken up by an individual, their life reflects beauty and wonder of indescribable freedom. The heart of you is the pure essence of everything that you have ever sought; it is your home.

One of the major advantages of the kits is the convenience they provide particularly for individuals who are homebound for various reasons including illness, limited funds, or lack of transportation. Home test kits can be ordered online and are shipped to your home. The test results are obtained within minutes after following directions that come with the kit or in the case of a test requiring interpretation by reference lab, the results are mailed to you in a few days in most cases. Tests traditionally performed by laboratories usually require a needle stick and the removal of a modest to moderate amount of blood from a vein which might be painful depending on the technique and proficiency of the phlebotomist. With the use of a home kit however, only a small amount of blood from a finger puncture is needed and is generally much better tolerated than the puncture of a vein. Many of the home tests don’t require collection of blood at all, but the collection of urine, hair or saliva instead.

The safety of the specimen collection hinges not only upon the technique and the proficiency of the person that collects it, but also on the environment in which the specimen is collected. It is a well-known fact that environments frequented by sick people generally harbor more germs (primarily viruses and bacteria), particularly during the height of flu season and which will certainly be the case in the event of a flu pandemic. Not having to go to a laboratory or doctor’s office to have a test specimen collected substantially reduces exposure to infectious disease producing viruses and bacteria which might be of major importance if you have a condition which lowers your immunity.

Home test kits also provide privacy and confidentiality of test results which is particularly important for individual who live in small communities where discussions in doctor’s offices sometimes become community knowledge. This is especially true with respect to tests for sexually transmitted diseases, illegal drug use and paternity. Many are also concerned about test results ending up in a national databank which does not happen in the case of home testing.

With the burgeoning illegal drug epidemic that is plaguing our society today, a home drug testing program might be the only way of ensuring a drug free home and the linchpin of family stability, particularly if you have teenagers. Drug test kits enable you to implement and enforce a Parent and Teen Drug Free Home Agreement which could prove priceless in terms of the future direction of your family.

Home testing might also be a good initial step in helping you decide on the type of group health insurance plan you select if you have not recently been to a doctor and are concerned that you might have a particular illness which has not been diagnosed. This is important because many of the PPO and other non-HMO insurance plans have pre-existing illness exclusions which are not covered for a specified period of time or are not covered at all once the policy goes into effect. If you discover that you do probably have a particular condition based on home test result that could very well be the deciding factor in whether or not you select an HMO or PPO insurance plan. If you are planning to purchase your own insurance home testing prior to the application might be of value in validating your answers to questions on the insurance application questionnaire, and might spare you the unexpected pre-existing illness exclusions(s) if your application is approved.

The use of a home testing kit can provide peace of mind regarding environment concerns and can be instrumental in diagnosing disease related to home environment hazards such as exposure to radon gas, lead and other heavy metals. Routine screening for these health hazards is not a part of traditional medical practice because environmental safety is not emphasized in medical training and screening tests to diagnose illnesses related to them are not routinely covered by insurance companies. The health-insurance industry reimburses based on a coding system. Services, including doctor visits and laboratory testing have specified service codes or CPT codes. When a claim for re-imbursement is submitted to an insurance company by your doctor, laboratory or other healthcare provider the insurance company is informed of the reason(s) the service was provided via diagnosis codes known as ICD-9-CM codes. If a carrier processes a claim in which a listed service code is not justified by an appropriate ICD-9-CM diagnosis code, the claim is denied and the recipient of the service (the patient) is billed. Given customary laboratory fees, that charge most likely will be significantly greater than the cost of a test kit to perform a comparable test. If a diagnosis is made by use of a test kit and additional future testing for that same problem is required the relevant ICD-9-CM code can then be submitted with futures claims to the insurance carrier and who should then pay the claim. A negative environmental safety home test on the other hand can provide peace of mind that you don’t the home environmental hazard test for.

Finally, home testing can be a bridge between not having health insurance and obtaining healthcare. An example is participation in clinical research trials which afford great opportunities for individuals to receive medical care who otherwise would not be able to afford the care. All clinical trials have what are known as inclusion criteria which include the diagnosis among other variables that have to be met in order to be a participant in the trial. A condition which is diagnosable via home test kit might be the necessary data for screening and eventual enrollment in a clinical trial. Social Security disability benefits are also an avenue for individuals without health insurance coverage to obtain coverage if deemed disabled following a disability determination evaluation. Many of the evaluations are performed however without applicants having established diagnoses because their inability to afford to see a doctor and have tests performed. It stands to reason that, if for example an applicant filing for disability due to fatigue has an accompanying diagnosis of AIDS or hepatitis C, whether the diagnosis was made via traditional laboratory testing or from the use of a home kit, the likelihood of obtaining disability benefits would be greater.

In summary, home test kits provide convenience and safety of the testing process, confidentiality of the test results, increased likelihood of a drug free home, and peace of mind with respect to concerns about possible home environmental hazards. Additionally the kits might diagnose problems that would otherwise go undiagnosed and can be of benefit in obtaining medical care, whether it is in the form participation in a clinical trial or the acquisition of health insurance.

In choosing a blood pressure monitor the accuracy of the device should be the most important consideration. Secondly, the reliability of the readings should be considered. Thirdly, the ease of use of the device should be taken into account.
Accuracy refers to the degree to which the blood pressure readings obtained actually reflects the true pressure within the arteries at the time that readings are performed. Reliability on the other hand, refers to the degree to which blood pressure readings reflect the average arterial pressure within a 24-hour period of time.

The technique of the individual performing the measurements, the attributes of the measuring device, and arm selection are the main variables that determine accuracy. The frequency of readings, the recording of the readings and understanding the many factors that can affect blood pressure are the main variables that determine the reliability of the readings.

One of most common reasons for an inaccurate reading is malpositioning of the arm in relationship to the heart when a reading is being taken. If the reading is taken with the arm hanging down well below the level of the heart the reading is likely to be spuriously higher than the true pressure, and if the arm is positioned higher than the level the heart the reading is likely to be spuriously low. Parenthetically, if the arm is not supported by a stationary structure such as a stand or another person if someone else is performing the reading, but is held in position against gravity by the individual on whom reading is being performed, a certain degree of isometric exercise is being performed which can have an effect on the reading. If achieving proper arm positioning is a problem, a wrist monitor with the Omron patented advanced positioning sensor technology is a likely solution. The device will alert you with a characteristic beep signal and will not begin to read at all if the arm is not in proper position. It allows you to take readings sitting and lying, knowing that at the accuracy of your readings is not being compromised by improper arm position. Since sitting readings are performed with the arm flexed at the elbow and supported by the hand of the contralateral arm isometric exercise is not performed during the readings.

Another very common cause of an invalid blood pressure reading is an improper cuff size in relationship to the circumference of the upper arm. Generally, if the cuff size is too small relative to the upper arm circumference the reading will be higher than the true arterial pressure. Conversely, if the cuff size is too large for the circumference of the arm the reading will be lower than the true pressure. The cuffs used for upper arm measurements come in several adult sizes. There is no standardization of the sizes between manufacturers, but for the sake of practicality the primary sizes are adult, adult large and thigh. Some manufacturers also produce an extra large adult size which is the size in between adult large and thigh. To ensure use of the appropriate cuff size the American Heart Association recommends that you measure your upper arm circumference and select a cuff with a specified arm circumference range that includes your measurement. If your arm circumference exceeds that of the largest cuff available you should consider one of the wrist monitors which generally accommodate wrist circumferences between 13.5 cm to 21 cm or 5.25 inches to 8.5 inches.

If the cuff is not inflated high enough before deflation is begun the systolic reading might be lower than the true arterial pressure. If the inflation and deflation process is interrupted and repetitive the overall reading is likely to be inaccurate. To eliminate the inaccuracies associated with these technical flaws, an automated unit, particularly one with the IntelliSense technology is a likely solution. IntelliSense is an exclusive technology developed by Omron which allows monitors to automatically inflate and deflate at a level optimal for each individual user, thus assuring accuracy and comfort. It requires no adjustments.

There are generally a few and sometimes several point differences in blood pressure readings between arms. The dominant arm i.e. the right arm in a right-handed person and the left arm in a left-handed person usually has the higher reading, which is considered to be the reading most reflective of the pressure within the arteries of the body in general. Thus, that arm should be arm in which readings are taken. Some of the blood pressure devices, particularly the wrist monitors are designed to take readings from left arm or wrist respectively, which means that your readings might be invalid if your are right-handed. A likely solution to this problem, even if you are left-handed but have higher readings in the right arm would be one of the units that can be adjusted to take readings from the desired arm or wrist.

If you are visually impaired and have difficulty reading the screen of a blood pressure measuring device there are some quality talking units that will give you an audio reading in addition to an LCD display.

The American Heart Association recognizes certain blood pressure monitors as approved, tested and validated by The Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation, the British medical Society and The International Protocol for the Validation of Automated Blood Pressure Measuring Devices.

The fact that a particular brand or model monitor is not on the list means that it either did past the tests or has never been subjected to the approval and validation testing protocol, which is the case with many of the newer devices which have been launched since the last lists were generated in 2008. Based on my experience with blood pressure monitors, the low-end priced units, i.e. $24.99- $39.99 range tend to be somewhat erratic in their readings whereas units that began at the intermediate $50 price range tend to be much more accurate and consistent. The higher-priced units are not necessarily any more accurate than the medium priced units but do provide some of the aforementioned benefits as well as the benefit described in the following paragraph.

The sine qua non for reliable blood pressure readings is performing multiple readings in a 24-hour period which is the basis for experts’ in the field of hypertension current recommendation to perform three readings in rapid succession in the morning and three readings in rapid succession at night. There are monitoring machines that will do this, average the readings, and allow downloading of the information into an accompanying software program installed on your PC. The information can then be presented to your doctor for analysis and proper integration into your treatment course.

In summary, you should take into account various factors relating to technique, anatomy, and attributes of the monitoring device which affect the accuracy of readings, as well as the ease of use, particularly with respect to obtaining reliable readings in choosing a blood pressure monitor.
